What does Functional Strength Training mean to me?

"Prior to discovering functional training, I never paid attention to the connection between exercising and real life activities. I considered myself in good shape and followed a pretty strict exercise regimen that consisted of weekly kickboxing workouts, nautilus machines, free weights, and the dreaded elliptical.  However, I did not realize what I was actually doing to my body throughout the years.  Once I was introduced to kettlebells and other types of functional training did I really understand and appreciate what functional training was about and what it could do for my body. When lifting weights, I used to exercise in a one dimensional fashion (which is what many people in the gyms do today).  However, in real life, no one moves in just “one dimension”, using only one muscle group at a time.  I greatly improved my core strength and muscle endurance as well as built better coordination, flexibility and balance by exercising in a “functional” way.

Functional Strength Training has enabled me to focus on full body compound movements which mimic real life activities and movements.  Not only do I follow this philosophy personally, but am so affected and changed by this method that I incorporate Functional Strength Training in all workouts for my clients."
